Autoimmune Disorders, Allergies & Food Sensitivities

Allergies are your immune system’s response to what it identifies as a harmful substance. They can be triggered by airborne allergens, foods, insect stings, medications, latex, drug allergies, and other substances. People can experience allergy symptoms at varying severity levels, from mild symptoms such as sneezing and watery eyes to more life-threatening symptoms like anaphylaxis.

A food sensitivity is different from an allergy because the response from the immune system is not immediate. It may take several days before you experience symptoms of a food sensitivity. They can cause uncomfortable symptoms like abdominal pain, fatigue, migraines, and IBS which can be greatly improved through lifestyle changes.

When someone has an autoimmune disorder, their body’s immune system attacks its own tissues. This increases the person’s likelihood of being prone to infection or disease because they have a weakened immune system.

Our Naturopathic Doctor can work with you to create a tailored plan to identify and treat or manage allergies, determine food sensitivities, or manage your autoimmune disorder.

Our practitioners frequently use acupuncture to manage many types of conditions including anxiety, depression, fertility, facial rejuvenation, digestive issues, sleep disorders, fatigue, muscular tension, and pain.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

Hormone replacement therapy is a natural way of adding new hormones into the body, also known as Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). It is typically used as people age and hormone levels drop, particularly for women who are in perimenopause or menopause. It’s used to increase the levels of the hormones that have dropped and improve moderate to severe menopause symptoms. It is only available through a prescription, and the type, combination and dosage is designed specifically for the needs of each patient.

At HealthOne, our Naturopathic Doctor has completed additional training in Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT).

Supplement & Vitamin Recommendations

At HealthOne Wellness, we believe health should be focused on diet, lifestyle, movement, and targeted supplements when needed. There are certain nutrients that are more difficult to consistently get from your diet, and in these cases, our Naturopathic Doctor will typically recommend a supplement to ensure you are meeting those requirements.

Supplementation can help prevent nutritional deficiencies and replenish depleted nutrient levels. For your convenience, we offer on -site our a range of supplements for our patients.

Functional Lab Testing

Our Naturopathic Doctor uses specialized laboratory testing to diagnose and treat your symptoms. These tests usually are not offered by your family doctor, and can help provide a better understanding of your unique circumstances and health needs. Functional lab tests are an excellent tool because they can give you a more specific and thorough understanding of your health to help treat the root cause of the issues you’re experiencing.

Food Sensitivity Testing (FST) is commonly performed at HealthOne Wellness by our Naturopathic Doctor. FST is a blood test that analyses the reaction of your blood to specific foods. The results will allow you to eliminate specific foods that may be creating inflammation in your body.

Modes of Naturopathic Treatment in Toronto

Naturopathic doctor looking at botanical medicine

Botanical Medicine

Botanical medicine uses specific plants to prevent or treat disease. It is a powerful yet gentle form of medicine that has been practiced for thousands of years.

Plants have unique medicinal properties that can benefit our organs and re-establish balance in the body. Naturopathic Doctors can use botanical medicine to treat the root cause of many health conditions.

Tinctures, herbal teas, powdered capsules, and tablets are all forms of botanical medicine. Naturopathic doctors are extensively trained in using botanicals as an effective way to treat specific health conditions.

Dietary Counselling

Naturopathic medicine believes that food can be used as a form of medicine to bring balance to the body. Eating a well-balanced diet that emphasizes unrefined, unprocessed and locally grown foods can help us achieve optimal health and well-being.

In North America, our diets have become increasingly processed, which is leading to an obesity epidemic as well as numerous chronic health conditions. Our Naturopathic Doctor is trained in the diagnosis and treatment of nutritionally based conditions and gastro-intestinal disorders. She can provide dietary recommendations and individualized treatments to improve your health.

Supplement Guidance

Naturopathic Doctors are experts in nutritional supplementation. They can prescribe dietary supplements to help optimize health and wellness, restore balance to the body, and manage chronic conditions. Naturopathic Doctors can also ensure there are no interactions that exist between your current medication and/or supplement plan.

Dietary supplements come in the form of pills, capsules, powders, gel tabs, extracts, or liquids. They can contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, amino acids, herbs or other plants, or enzymes.

Supplementation may help provide the essential nutrients for healthy functioning, prevent nutritional deficiencies, or lower your risk of health problems. The combination of some supplements and herbal products may also help lower the required dose of some prescription medications. At HealthOne we are also able to create personalized supplementation depending on your needs.

Traditional Chinese Medicine & Acupuncture

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient practice that has been used in China for thousands of years. It is a natural wellness approach that often includes supporting the flow of energy (also referred to as qi) throughout the body and restoring balance between the Yin and Yang.

TCM is practiced by both our Naturopathic Doctor and Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner at HealthOne. The types of treatment used include Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture (including the use of ordinary needles, leather needles, triangular needles, blood collection needles, fire needles, knife needles, plum blossom needles, etc.), Moxibustion, BIAN energy stone, cupping, and Tuina.

Lifestyle Counselling

Our Naturopathic Doctor practices lifestyle counseling on topics including nutrition, sleep, stress management, and physical activity. Lifestyle counseling helps clients make healthier choices and better decisions when it comes to managing their health. Many of us know how to live healthy lives, but struggle with consistent implementation. Numerous studies show that ongoing healthy lifestyle counseling can help bridge this gap and create positive change.

Common topics addressed in lifestyle counseling with our Naturopathic Doctor include:

Nutrition: Nutrition topics include gut health, skin concerns, adequate protein and fiber intake, as well as chronic disease management.

Sleep: Sleep hygiene and techniques to get a quality night sleep are an important foundation of healthy living.

Stress Management: Chronically elevated cortisol levels in the body due to stress can lead to inflammation, weight gain, increased blood pressure, and lowered immunity.

Physical Activity: Movement and exercise can help you improve heart function and circulation, as well as support healthy blood sugar levels.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where does HealthOne offer naturopathic medicine in Toronto?

HealthOne offers naturopathic consultations through its Wellness department at HealthOne Harbourfront, 110 Harbour Street, Suite 301, Toronto, Ontario M5J 0B7. The page currently lists wellness@healthone.ca and 416-613-5633. Confirm the current naturopathic doctor, appointment availability and clinic hours when booking.

Is a naturopathic doctor regulated in Ontario?

Yes. Naturopathic doctors practising in Ontario must be registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. “Naturopath,” “naturopathic doctor” and “ND” are protected titles. Patients can use the College’s public register to confirm a practitioner’s registration status and whether the practitioner has met additional prescribing or IV-therapy standards.

What is the difference between a naturopath and a naturopathic doctor in Ontario?

In Ontario, “naturopath,” “naturopathic doctor” and “ND” are protected titles reserved for practitioners registered with the College of Naturopaths of Ontario. Someone offering unregulated wellness or natural-health services is not permitted to use those titles unless registered. Check the College’s public register rather than relying on terms such as “traditional naturopath.”

What does a naturopathic doctor do?

A naturopathic doctor reviews health concerns, medical history, medications, supplements, diet, sleep, activity and other relevant factors. Depending on the assessment and the practitioner’s authorized scope, care may include lifestyle or dietary counselling, selected natural health products, acupuncture, authorized laboratory testing or referral to another healthcare professional. Treatment recommendations and evidence vary by condition.

What happens during the first naturopathic appointment at HealthOne?

HealthOne states that the initial assessment generally lasts 60–75 minutes. The naturopathic doctor may review your symptoms, diagnoses, medications, supplements, allergies, previous test results, diet, sleep and lifestyle. Bring an up-to-date medication and supplement list. Any proposed tests or treatments, their evidence, limitations, risks, alternatives and fees should be explained before you agree.

Can naturopathic care replace my family doctor or specialist?

No. Naturopathic care should not replace medically necessary assessment, diagnosis, screening, emergency care or treatment from a physician or specialist. Tell every clinician involved in your care about your diagnoses, test results, prescriptions and supplements. The naturopathic doctor should refer you when symptoms or treatment needs fall outside their scope or competence.

Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication in Ontario?

Some Ontario naturopathic doctors can prescribe specified drugs if they have completed the additional education and examination required by the College. Their prescribing authority is limited to substances and conditions permitted by Ontario regulations. Confirm the practitioner’s prescribing status through the College’s public register and do not stop or change an existing prescription without consulting the professional managing it.

Can a blood test diagnose food sensitivities?

IgG food-panel testing should not be described as diagnosing food allergy or proving that a food causes symptoms or inflammation. Food-specific IgG commonly reflects exposure to a food. Suspected food allergy, especially after hives, swelling, breathing difficulty or anaphylaxis, requires appropriate medical or allergy assessment. Unnecessary elimination diets can create nutritional and financial burdens.

Are naturopathic treatments and laboratory tests covered by OHIP or insurance?

Naturopathic visits and tests ordered privately by a naturopathic doctor are generally not covered by OHIP. Some extended health plans reimburse eligible naturopathic consultations, subject to annual limits and practitioner-registration requirements. Laboratory tests, supplements, injections and programs may be excluded. Confirm coverage directly with your insurer before treatment.

How much does a naturopathic appointment at HealthOne cost?

The page does not currently publish consultation, testing, injection, supplement or program fees. HealthOne should provide the initial and follow-up consultation fees and separately itemize laboratory tests, products, injections and program charges before consent. A complimentary meet-and-greet should not be presented as a complete clinical assessment.

Are vitamins, herbs and supplements safe to take with prescription medication?

Natural health products can cause side effects and interact with prescription medicines, other supplements, medical conditions, surgery, pregnancy or breastfeeding. Give the naturopathic doctor and pharmacist a complete product list. Use Health Canada-authorized products when available and do not reduce, replace or discontinue prescribed medication without the approval of the professional managing it.

Does HealthOne offer vitamin injections?

The page advertises intramuscular vitamin B12 and vitamin D injections. An injection should be recommended only after an appropriate assessment of clinical need, contraindications, alternatives and relevant test results. Ask who prescribes and administers it, whether that practitioner has the required College authorization, what it costs and what side effects or warning signs require follow-up.

When should I seek medical care instead of waiting for a naturopathic appointment?

Seek urgent medical assessment for chest pain, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke, severe allergic reaction, suicidal thoughts, severe dehydration, significant bleeding, sudden neurological symptoms or rapidly worsening illness. Call 911 for an emergency. Naturopathic appointments should not delay emergency care, medically necessary investigations or specialist treatment.
